International
Geographical Union (IGU)
Torino,
Italy
July

Conference
Venue
The 7th Conference of the IGU Commission on Water sustainability entitled Managing Water in a Changing World is held at Torino, from 27 to 31 July 2009.
Most precisely, the Conference is held in the Aula Magna
(Large Seminar Room) of the Department of Animal and Human Biology
(BAU) of the University of Torino, in Via Accademia Albertina, 13 (see
location “H” in the map at page 10).
The Conference is open to the scientists of all nations.
The
Faculties and Departments of the University of Torino are located in
many buildings throughout the city. The central headquarter of the
University of Torino is hosted since the beginning of the 18th century in the city center, not far from the Royal Palace.
The Alma Universitas Taurinensis,
the Latin name of the University of Torino, was founded in 1404 by a
Bull issued by Pope Benedict XIII. The inauguration of the prestigious
building in via Po, close to piazza Castello, the centre of power and
other educational institutions of the City, occurred in the academic
year 1720-1721.
The University of Torino is one of the most ancient and prestigious Italian Universities, and is today one of the largest Italian Universities. It has about 70.000 students, 4.000 academic, administrative and
technical staff, 1800 post-graduate and post-doctoral students and 120
buildings in different parts of Torino and in key places in Piemonte;
the University of Torino can be considered as a
“city-within-a-city”, promoting culture and
producing/creating, research, innovation, training and employment.
The University of Torino carries out scientific research and organizes
courses in all disciplines, except Engineering and
Architecture. The 12 Faculties of the University of Torino cover
virtually every field of knowledge; the Medical Diagnostic,
Biosensoristics and Nanotechnologies research centers are between the
best research centers in Italy.

How to reach Torino
By air:
The
Città di Torino Airport
(Sandro Pertini) is located 15 km NNW of
the town centre and is connected to the motor-way system via
the North ring road.
A
continuous coach service operates at the airport for
Torino and vice versa (info: +39 011 3000.611 Sadem).
A
new railway links the airport to a station downtown Torino (but not directly to the town center): Satti
Dora Railway Station, info 0039 011 6910000.
The main telephone numbers of the Città di Torino Airport
are:
Telephone
+39 011 56.76.361/2
Telefax +39 011 56.76.420
Ticket office: +39 011 56.76.373

Another alternative is to arrive to Milano Malpensa Airport and come to Torino by a coach service.
By train:
There are three main stations and a secondary station in Torino.
PORTA NUOVA
is the Torino's central rail station where trains leave from and arrive
at all destinations. Its location in the town centre makes it easy
to reach by public transport. It faces on the Piazza
Carlo Felice, where the central Via Roma starts.
PORTA SUSA
The traditional through station for Milan and East and
West bound trains in general. Located in Piazza XVIII Dicembre,
it allows easy urban, suburban and extra-urban bus line connections.
It houses a bar/restaurant, a news-stand, a tobacconist and a
cash dispenser. Actually a new bigger station is in construction.
TORINO LINGOTTO
A strategically important station, once only hooked up to goods
junctions, it now connects Turin with Southern Italy, particularly
the Cuneo area and Liguria. It has been refurbished recently
and is complete with all services. It is located in the southern
area of town close to Moncalieri and the "Lingotto" Conference
Centre.
TORINO DORA
The Cinderella of Turin's rail stations. Located in north-western
part of the town, it mostly serves local trains to the Canavese
area (TO-CERES), managed by Satti. It is planned its direct connection with the other railway stations.
By car:
The most important highways connections are:
- A4 Turin-Milan-Venice
- A5 Turin-Ivrea-Aosta
- A6 Turin-Fossano-Ceva-Savona
- A21 Turin-Asti-Alessandria-Genoa
- A21 Turin-Asti-Alessandria-Piacenza
